BIBLE/VIRTUES: This month, we'll be focusing on the virtues of wisdom and responsibility in our classroom. (Creativity is the schoolwide virtue.) As we study the Proverbs, we will gain an understanding of the value of wisdom for bringing blessing into our lives and the lives of those around us. Being responsible means doing the things you are expected to do and accepting the consequences--good or bad-- that result from your actions. The beginning of the school year is a great time to set an expectation for responsibility: for our choices, our assignments, our homework, our behaviors, and more! Additionally, our read-aloud for the first six weeks of school is a biography of George Muller, who relied solely on prayer to care for thousands of orphans in Bristol, England. The story of his conversion is one that always resonates with the students, as George goes from mocking God, making a series of terrible life choices, and refusing to take responsibility for any of them, to wholeheartedly repenting, trusting God to provide for his every need, and taking full responsibility for the thousands of children he rescued, nurtured, and taught about Jesus. He exemplifies wisdom, responsibility, and creativity!
MATH:
- Assess mastery of addition facts.
- Improve speed and recall of multiplication facts.
- Practice multiplying by a 2-digit number.
- Divide a 2- or 3-digit number by a multiple of 10 or a 2-digit divisor.
NOTE: Do not feel pressured to complete all the problems in the textbook and the workbook for these multiplication and division lessons. If students have mastered the skills and are getting accurate answers the majority of the time, have them only do even problems, for example. If they are struggling with the large numbers in these lessons, back off and have them work problem with smaller numbers first until the are confident enough to move on to problems with more digits.
SPELLING:
- Assess mastery of words spelled with the sound of /k/ spelled "ch."
- Learn to spell words ending in "ain."
GRAMMAR:
- Know how to make subjects and verbs agree in a sentence.
- Write a practice and an improved sentence.
- Recognize a preposition and a prepositional phrase in a sentence.
WRITING/VOCABULARY:
- Learn the definitions of the four vocabulary words and be able to correctly use each word in a sentence.
- Practice dictionary skills.
- Write key word outlines.
- Write a paragraph using an outline as a guide.
- Use quality adjectives, -ly adverbs, strong verbs, prepositional openers, and vocabulary words in writing.
- Use descriptive, 5-senses language in writing
- Understand how descriptive language helps us develop pictures in our minds as though we are experiencing events with all five senses when reading.
- Increase vocabulary through exposure to unfamiliar words.
LATIN:
- Learn ten vocabulary words and the chapter maxim.
- Be familiar with the endings on the first declension "mensa" chart and be able to use the chart to decline and/or translate a noun.
- Know that Latin nouns have gender, number, and case.
- Know the names of the Latin cases and the mnemonic device "Never Give Davus Any Apples" to help remember the cases.
- Know that there are no words for the article adjectives (a, an, the) in Latin.
- Find the stem of a Latin noun.
- Know the significance and the general histories of the establishment of the English colonies in Roanoke and Jamestown.
- Know the names and contributions of historical figures Sir Walter Raleigh, Captain John Smith, Chief Wahunsunacawh (otherwise known as Chief Powhatan), Pocahontas, and John Rolfe.
SCIENCE:
- Know that ligaments connect bones to each other.
- Know that joints help bones move.
- Be familiar with the scientific method and know what the terms control and variable mean in an experiment.
- Identify key facts from a reading passage.
- Use a study guide to prepare for a test.
GEOGRAPHY:
- Develop a heart of compassion for the peoples of the world who don't yet know Christ..
- Begin memorizing the names of some of the major islands in the West Indies.
MEMORY WORK:
Geography: We will continue memorizing the names and locations of islands in the West Indies. A hard copy of the map can be found behind the "memory" tab in your child's binder. Additional maps, as well as MP3s of the song, are available at this link: Geography Resources.
History: Students will memorize a portion of the Declaration of Independence (bolded portion only - recitation on 11/10) and 24 key dates. The key dates have accompanying jingles that do not have to be memorized, but will help students memorize the dates and retain details about the events to which they correspond. We will test over the first six dates on 9/29:

Poetry: This quarter, we'll work on memorizing and reciting Proverbs 2:1-11 (NIV). Recitation will be on 10/6.
My son, if you accept my words
and store up my commands within you,
