MATH:
- Review previously learned concepts.
- Assess mastery of fifth-grade math concepts.
GRAMMAR/WRITING/VOCABULARY:
- Write a highly polished final draft of a 5-paragraph paper with an introduction and conclusion.
READING:
- Improve reading comprehension and fluency.
- Expand vocabulary.
- Identify virtues, as well as elements of truth, beauty and goodness, in reading passages.
- Formulate questions from reading passages.
LATIN:
- Review previously learned concepts.
- Practice conjugation and declension.
HISTORY:
- Review key events, people, and places in Texas history.
- Memorize the components of the lymphatic system.
- Understand the difference between innate and adaptive/acquired immunity.
- Know that Gregor Mendel, and Austrian monk, pioneered the science of genetics.
- Understand the basics of how genes are passed from generation to generation.
- Know that cells replicate by mitosis or meiosis.
- Use a study guide to prepare for a test.
- Assess mastery of concepts related to the immune system and human development.
GEOGRAPHY:
- Develop a heart of compassion for the peoples of the world who don't yet know Christ.
- Assess mastery of the names and locations of the 50 states.
- Assess mastery of the names of the state capitals.
- Memorize the names and locations of some of the Mexican states.
Geography: We are currently memorizing the names and locations of the Mexican states that border the U.S. states, as well as Distrito Federal and the states on the Yucatan Peninsula. A hard copy of this map can be found behind the "memory" tab in your child's binder. We are using the "Mexican Hat Dance" song in class to help us learn the border states. Additional maps, as well as MP3s of the corresponding Mexico song, are available at this link: Geography Resources.
History: Students should memorize the Preamble of the U.S. Constitution and the 28 key dates. The key dates have accompanying jingles that do not have to be memorized, but will help students memorize the dates and retain details about the events to which they correspond.
