DISCIPLESHIP:
This month, we'll focus our study on the virtue of honesty.
MATH:
MATH:
- Know what a tessellation is.
- Determine whether or not a shape can tessellate.
- Make different tessellations with given shapes..
- Design shapes that can tessellate.
- Review for upcoming test.
READING:
- Learn about frontier America through the reading of Little Britches.
- Engage in meaningful Socratic dialogue.
- Learn about the Lewis & Clark expedition and westward expansion.
ORAL NARRATION: After each chapter (or after a few pages), students should retell the passage to parents. Parents should then ask questions about the meaning of the passage and engage in Socratic discussion with their student.
WRITING/VOCABULARY:
- Learn the purpose and components of a book report.
- Identify errors in passages and properly correct them using proofreading symbols.
- Write introductions and conclusions.
- Use a variety of dramatic openers in writing assignments.
- Assess mastery of this year's vocabulary words.
SPELLING:
- Assess generalizations for adding the -ly suffix.
- Learn to spell words with the sound of AIR spelled "er."
GRAMMAR:
- Apply grammar rules and use proper mechanics in writing assignments.
LATIN:
- Memorize maxim and vocabulary words for Ch29.
- Know that ablative case includes prepositions that indicate movement away from something.
- Know who Tecumseh was and what he was known for.
- Know about the drama that surrounded the 1840 presidential election.
SCIENCE:
- Learn about the endocrine system and the roles it plays in the body.
- Continue memorizing the major bones and systems of the body.
- Use notes to review study for upcoming test.
- Develop a heart of compassion for the peoples of the world who don't yet know Christ.
- Assess mastery of the names and locations of the provinces of Canada and the location of Greenland.
MEMORY WORK:
Scripture: We'll spend the year working on our scripture memorization of Matthew 5:1-16 (KJV). Our intent with scripture memory is for students to hide God’s word deep in their hearts so that they can call upon it for comfort, reassurance, and strength in times of trouble. With that in mind, we will not be testing over the scripture this year, but we will be reciting it together as a school every morning during assembly time. Here is a link to an article that explains why we prefer to have our students memorize the King James Version.
Geography: We'll begin working on the maps of Canada and Greenland this week. Hard copies of the maps are located behind the "memory" tab in your child's binder. Additional maps, as well as MP3s of the songs, are available at this link:
History: Continue memorizing the Timeline Song with Motions.
Science: Students have science memory work that corresponds to each unit in the book. Unit 6 is broken into two parts. Students will need to know the first five body systems and the bones for the first test, and the other information for the last test:

Body Systems:
1. Integumentary system - Covers and protects the body (skin).
2. Skeletal system - Supports the body, protects organs and permits movement (bones).
3. Muscular system - Moves the body and helps support it (muscles).
4. Nervous system - Controls the body; allows a person to think and feel (nerves).
5. Endocrine system - Releases hormones that control many of the body's processes.
6. Circulatory system - Carries materials to and from cells throughout the body (heart and blood).
7. Respiratory system - Delivers oxygen into the blood stream (nose, trachea, lungs).
8. Digestive system - Breaks down food so body can use its nutrients (mouth, stomach, intestines).
9. Urinary system - Removes waste materials from body (kidneys, bladder).
10. Immune system - Defends the body against disease (lymph nodes).
