DISCIPLESHIP:

This month, we'll focus our study on the virtue of courage.  

MATH:

• Review concepts for upcoming final test.

Please complete all the work assigned for home days, including workbook and practice exercises, as well as math facts practice. Please grade all work by first indicating which answers are incorrect and then giving your student an opportunity to correct his/her mistakes before offering assistance.

READING:

• Learn about Texas history through the reading of Make Way for Sam Houston.
• Engage in meaningful Socratic dialogue.
• Learn about the Gold Rush expedition and westward expansion through the reading of By the Great Horn Spoon.

ORAL NARRATION: After reading the book (or after a few pages), students should retell the passage to parents. Parents should then ask questions about the meaning of the passage and engage in Socratic discussion with their student. 

WRITING/VOCABULARY:

• Learn the purpose and components of a book report.
• Apply grammar and usage rules to writing.

SPELLING:

• Assess words ending in with the sound /awt/ spelled OUGHT.

GRAMMAR:

• Apply grammar rules and use proper mechanics in writing assignments.

HISTORY:

• Know the names of Houston, Austin, Bowie, Crockett, Lamar, etc.
• Know that Quanah Parker was the last great Comanche chief.
• Be able to identify the six flags that flew over Texas.

Revolutionary figure poster: Students should conduct some brief online research about one of the Texas revolutionaries or republic leaders, such as Stephen F. Austin, William Travis, Col. James Fannin, Sam Houston, Davy Crockett, Mirabeau Lamar, etc. Make a poster that includes a picture, key facts, and a short paragraph about his contributions to Texas. Students will present these to the class on Monday.

SCIENCE: 

• Learn about the urinary system, its components, and the roles it plays in the body. 
• Memorize the major systems of the body and the components of blood.

MEMORY WORK:

Scripture: We'll spend the year working on our scripture memorization of Matthew 5:1-16 (KJV). Our intent with scripture memory is for students to hide God’s word deep in their hearts so that they can call upon it for comfort, reassurance, and strength in times of trouble. With that in mind, we will not be testing over the scripture this year, but we will be reciting it together as a school every morning during assembly time. Here is a link to an article that explains why we prefer to have our students memorize the King James Version.

History: We'll test over the Timeline Song with Motions on Monday.  

Science: Students have science memory work that corresponds to each unit in the book. Unit 6 is broken into two parts. Students will need to know the first five body systems and the bones for the first test, and the other information for the last test:

Body Systems:
6. Circulatory system - Carries materials to and from cells throughout the body (heart and blood).
7. Respiratory system - Delivers oxygen into the blood stream (nose, trachea, lungs).
8. Digestive system - Breaks down food so body can use its nutrients (mouth, stomach, intestines).
9. Urinary system - Removes waste materials from body (kidneys, bladder).
10. Immune system - Defends the body against disease (lymph nodes).

Components of blood:
1. Red blood cells - Have hemoglobin to carry oxygen
2. White blood cells - Help body fight disease
3. Platelets - Tiny fragments of cells that help stop bleeding
4. Plasma - Liquid portion of the blood

Poetry: We'll test over our quarter 4 poem, "Peach Hymn of the Republic" this week.
