BIBLE/VIRTUES: God created a world that is orderly, with one thing following another. Spring always follows winter. Night always follows day. Adulthood always follows childhood. Order around us creates order inside us. Orderliness gives us peace of mind. It's why many of us thrive when we have schedules, but life feels out-of-control and scary when we don't. Orderliness is a virtue we develop to achieve our goals by doing the things we should do when/how we should do them. Orderliness is being neat and living with a sense of harmony. If we are organized, we know where things are when we need them. We are able to solve problems step-by-step instead of going in circles. Orderliness is a particularly valuable virtue in school or in the workplace, so we should make every effort to develop it in our children.
MATH:
- Find the volume of an irregular solid.
- Assess mastery of concepts related to volume.
- Review previously taught concepts to prepare for upcoming test.
- Build speed and recall of division facts.
MATH FACTS - GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS:
Here are the instructions for administering facts practice sheets:
1. Set a timer for five minutes. Have your child complete as many facts on the page as possible before the timer goes off.
2. When the five minutes is up, if your child has not finished, please mark the place where he/she left off, and then have the student finish the sheet.
3. Parents, please use the key sent home in binders to check your child's work. (Save these to use for grading all future facts pages.) Have the student make any corrections.

SPELLING:
- Assess mastery of words containing the sound of /awt/ spelled AUGHT and words containing the soft c.
- Learn to spell words containing the sound of /awt/ spelled OUGHT and words containing two hard c's.
WRITING/VOCABULARY:
- From an outline, write body paragraphs of a research paper.
- Write an introduction that includes an attention-getter, background information, and states the three topics.
- Write a conclusion that restates the three topics, gives a summary statement about the historical figure, and ends with a sentence that repeats or reflects words key descriptive words from the introduction.
READING:
- Summarize a passage through oral and written narration.
- Identify virtues--as well as elements of truth, beauty, and goodness--in reading passages.
- Engage in meaningful Socratic dialogue.
HISTORY:
- Know that Texas operated as its own country for ten years and that Sam Houston was the first president.
HISTORY JOURNAL NARRATION: Students should have been doing oral narrations all year long. Now, it's time for them to do some written narrations. They should write a 5-7 sentence summary of their reading for the day. It should be a properly formatted paragraph with proper capitalization, punctuation and spelling utilized throughout. It should give a broad outline of the events--not too detailed, but well ordered, with no major facts missing.
SCIENCE:
- Be familiar with the parts of a flower and understand how pollination works.
- Use a study guide to prepare for a test.
- Know the parts of a flower, the parts of a seed, and the major animal pollinators.
GEOGRAPHY:
- Develop a heart of compassion for the peoples of the world who don't yet know Christ.
- Memorize the names and locations of the Mexican states that border the USA, the location of the Mexican capital, and the names and locations of the states on the Yucatan peninsula.
PRACTICE MAP: Print a copy of the map using the 5th Grade Documents link above. Have students label each state and capital.
MEMORY WORK:
Geography: A hard copy of the maps can be found behind the "poetry/maps" tab in your child's binder. Additional maps, as well as MP3s of the song, are available at this link: Geography Resources.
History: Students will memorize 24 key dates this year. The key dates have accompanying jingles that do not have to be memorized, but will help students memorize the dates and retain details about the events to which they correspond. The cumulative quiz over dates 1-24 will be on May 3.
