Dear parents,
Next week is the final week of the 1st quarter of fifth grade! Hopefully by now, you've established a good routine on your homeschool days and are feeling comfortable with the pace and rhythm of the assignments. I am proud of how far we've come together so far this year. These kids have already learned so much, but there's still so much more to know! I would love to chat with you about your student's progress. We will be having conferences on Monday, October 14. I will also open some Friday spots in case the 14th doesn't work for you. BIBLE/VIRTUES:
This month, we'll be focusing on the virtues of compassion, self-control (classroom virtues), and fortitude (the schoolwide virtue.) In our study of history, we will see how different groups of people dealt with the Native Americans and how their compassion (or lack thereof) affected their ability to get along with their neighbors. We will also learn how William Wilberforce passionately worked to end the slave trade. The Proverbs will remind us of the wisdom of maintaining self-control. Nearly every history lesson includes a focus on fortidude, either in the moral sense of standing up against injustice,or the physcial sense of showing courage in the face of fear or difficulty.
MATH:
- Establish a baseline for addition facts.
- Multiply a whole number by a fraction.
- Solve multi-step word problems involving fractions.
- Practice multiplying fractions.
- Multiply a fraction by a unit fraction.
- Improve speed and accuracy of addition facts.
SPELLING:
- Assess mastery of words that are exceptions to the I-before-E generalization.
- Practice spelling words that contain IE and EI.
GRAMMAR:
- Identify, classify, compose and diagram pattern 1 sentences that include compound parts, conjunctions, and interjections.
- Relate object pronouns and the pronoun cases to noun cases in Latin.
- Know that "not" is NOT a verb, but an adverb that answers the question "how?".
- Know that some helping verbs can be used at the beginning of a sentence to form a question.
WRITING/VOCABULARY:
- Learn four new vocabulary words, and properly use them when writing.
- Write a polished final draft using teacher feedback and a checklist.
- Assess creative writing skills.
READING:
- Be able to arrally narrate a passage.
- Expand vocabulary.
- Identify themes, virtues, vice, and elements of truth, beauty and goodness, in reading passages.
LATIN:
- Learn ten new vocabulary words.
- Continue memorizing the second-declension neuter chart.
- Decline 1st- and 2nd-declension nouns, and and conjugate 1st conjugation verbs.
- Begin translating simple Latin sentences.
- Know that a noun used as the subject of a sentence is in the nominative case.
- Assess mastery of previously learned vocabulary words.
HISTORY:
- Be familiar with the accomplishments of George Washington in the French and Indian War.
- Begin memorizing the key dates for the French and Indian War.
- Know what events led to the French and Indian War.
- Know what Acadia wa, and be familiafr with the events that tool place there.
- Undertsand why we speak English in America, rather than French or Spanish.
SCIENCE:
- Assess mastery of material related to the muscular, digestive, and renal systems
- Understand the importance of water to the proper function of the body.
- Know what the macronutirents are: fats, carbs, and proteins.
- Know how to read and interpret a nutrition label.
GEOGRAPHY:
- Develop a heart of compassion for the peoples of the world who don't yet know Christ.
- Assess mastery of the names and locations of the larger islands in the West Indies.
- Assess mastery of the names of the islands that constitute the Lesser Antilles.
WEST INDIES TEST FORMAT:
This is a two-part assessment:
1. PART 1: From a word bank, students will need to be able to label the following: Cuba, Puerto Rico, Haiti, Domincian Republic, Jamaica, Bahamas, San Salvador (part of the Bahamas), Trinidad & Tobago, the Caribbean Sea, and the Lesser Antilles. These must all be properly spelled and capitalized.
2. PART 2: Without a word bank, students will need to be able to name the islands that are in the Lesser Antilles. A copy of the song (see link below) will be printed with blanks where the names of these islands can be filled in. Spelling will not count on this portion. If the student would prefer to sing/say the song to me, or just write out the names of the islands, they are welcome to do that. These islands do not have to be listed in any particular order.
MEMORY WORK:
Geography: We'll be memorizing the names and locations of some countries in the West Indies for the next few weeks. A hard copy of this map can be found behind the "memory" tab in your child's binder. Additional maps, as well as MP3s of the corresponding song, are available at this link: Geography Resources.
History: Students will memorize a portion of the Declaration of Independence (bolded portion only - recitation on 11/10) and 21 key dates. The key dates have accompanying jingles that do not have to be memorized, but will help students memorize the dates and retain details about the events to which they correspond. 1.
