DISCIPLESHIP: This month, as a school community, we'll focus on the virtue of compassion. As a class, our focus will be on perseverance. This is the time of year when we all begin to get tired, and we long to be done with school. This virtue helps encourage us all to stay the course, believing that we will reap a harvest at the proper time if we don't give up!
MATH:
MATH:
- Assess mastery of problems related to average.
- Understand rate.
- Find the rate given two quantities.
- Find the value for a multiple of the unit given the rate.
- Solve word problems involving rate and rate tables.
- Practice solving problems related to rate.
SPELLING:
- Assess mastery of words with the sound of /ĭbl/ spelled IBLE.
- Learn to spell words with the sound of /ĭbl/ spelled ABLE..
GRAMMAR:
- Know the parts of a book and how to use them to find information when doing research.
- Be able to classify and label pattern 4 sentences.
WRITING/VOCABULARY:
- Know the components of an essay (introduction with a topic sentence and dramatic opener, supporting paragraphs, and a conclusion that restates the topic and includes a final clincher).
- Be able to construct an essay with topic sentences and detailed arguments.
- Engage in meaningful Socratic discussion.
- Be able to summarize a passage through oral narration.
- Identify virtues and vices in characters in Twenty-One Balloons.
- Increase vocabulary through exposure to new and unfamiliar words.
LATIN:
- Assess mastery of previously learned vocabulary words and maxims.
- Learn new vocabulary words.
HISTORY:
- Assess mastery of key dates.
- Know the meaning of the term "abolitionist," and be familiar with some of the names and legacies of African-American abolitionists.
- Understand the factors that drove Westward expansion in the United States.
- Appreciate our Texas heritage through Texas History Day activities.
SCIENCE:
- Assess mastery of concepts related to the senses and the integumentary system.
- Know the basic anatomy of the immune system and understand its purposes.
GEOGRAPHY:
- Develop a heart of compassion for the peoples of the world who don't yet know Christ.
- Begin to memorize the names and locations of the U.S. states.
- Begin to memorize the names of the U.S. capital cities.
MEMORY WORK:
Scripture: We'll spend the year working on our scripture memorization of Psalm 27 (NIV). Our intent with scripture memory is for students to hide God’s word deep in their hearts so that they can call upon it for comfort, reassurance, and strength in times of trouble. With that in mind, we will not be testing over this scripture, but we will be reciting it together as a school every morning during assembly time.
Geography: We'll continue memorizing our states and capitals. A hard copy of the map can be found behind the "memory" tab in your child's binder. Additional maps, as well as MP3s of the song, are available at this link: Geography Resources.
History: Students will memorize 21 key dates this year. The key dates have accompanying jingles that do not have to be memorized, but will help students remember the dates and the corresponding events. We will test over the first sixteen dates on 3/2:
