BIBLE/VIRTUES: This month, we'll be focusing on the virtues of compassion and self-control. Ten times in the Old Testament--including five times in the Psalms--God is described as being "gracious and compassionate." We will spend some time, as we enter our study of the Psalms, dwelling on these amazing attributes of God and talking about how we can extend compassion and grace to others. We will also talk about self-control. The classroom is one of the best possible laboratories for both studying and practicing this virtue. We will also explore and discuss the importance of "thoroughness," our schoolwide virtue.
MATH:
- Assess mastery of previously learned concepts.
- Assess mastery of multiplication facts.
- Understand multiplication of a fraction by a whole number as repeated addition of the fraction.
- Multiply a fraction by a whole number.
- Solve multi-step word problems involving fractions.
- Multiply a fraction by a unit fraction.
SPELLING:
- Assess mastery of the I-Before-E generalization.
- Practice spelling words that contain IE and EI.
GRAMMAR:
- Label and diagram sentences that include helping verbs, question verbs, and not adverbs.
- Write practice and improved sentences using prescribed labels.
- Know what an irregular verb is, and be familiar with some common ones.
- Know what conjunctions and interjections are and understand their functions in a sentence.
WRITING/VOCABULARY:
- Learn the definitions of the four vocabulary words, and be able to correctly use each word in a sentence.
- Practice dictionary skills.
- Increase vocabulary through exposure to unfamiliar words.
- Practice reading comprehension.
LATIN:
- Memorize the conjugation chart for the irregular verb SUM.
- Memorize the 2nd declension masculine noun endings.
- Decline and translate 2nd declension masculine nouns.
HISTORY:
- Know that the French and Indian War was fought over control of land in North America.
- Know that the War was between the French, the English, and their Indian allies on both sides.
- Know the story of what happened to the citizens of Acadia.
NOTE: Ch 9 is about the famous English abolitionist, William Wilberforce. He was an incredibly influential and godly man, and I'd highly encourage you to read it if you can make the time. You will be blessed. However, we have to skip (or double up on) on a couple of chapters in order to have time for our Texas history unit at the end of the year. Since Wilberforce was not an an American, this is one of the chapters we decided to make optional. We will study some famous American abolitionists later in the year and will circle back to some of the material in this chapter then.
SCIENCE:
- Identify key facts from a reading passage.
- Know the three macronutrients are carbs, fats, and proteins.
- Know the purposes of water in the body.
GEOGRAPHY:
- Develop a heart of compassion for the peoples of the world who don't yet know Christ..
- Begin memorizing the names of the Canadian Provinces and Greenland.
MEMORY WORK:
Geography: We will begin memorizing the names and locations of the provinces of Canada. A hard copy of the map can be found behind the "memory" tab in your child's binder. Additional maps, as well as MP3s of the song, are available at this link: Geography Resources.
History: Students will memorize a portion of the Declaration of Independence (bolded portion only - recitation on 11/10) and 24 key dates. The key dates have accompanying jingles that do not have to be memorized, but will help students memorize the dates and retain details about the events to which they correspond. We will test over the first twelve dates on 11/29&30:
