BIBLE/VIRTUES: This month, we'll be focusing on the virtues of courage and respect in our classroom. (Justice is the schoolwide virtue.) We'll talk about how we can show respect to our fellow classmates, teachers, administrators, parents, and political leaders. We'll have opportunities to discuss how the colonists navigated the challenges of respecting other cultures and other religions. We'll have opportunities to practice courage by facing our fears of public speaking as we prepare to give our first set of recitations in a few weeks. As we study history, we'll see many examples of the courage that it took to settle in the New World.
MATH:
- Review previously learned concepts for upcoming test.
- Improve speed and accuracy of multiplication facts.
SPELLING:
- Assess mastery of words ending in "ice."
- Learn exceptions to the I-Before-E generalization.
GRAMMAR:
- Label and diagram sentences that include object pronouns.
- Write practice and improved sentences using prescribed labels.
- Know that the word "not" is not a verb, but an adverb.
- Be familiar with the "question verbs," and identify/label them in a sentence.
WRITING/VOCABULARY:
- Learn the definitions of the four vocabulary words, and be able to correctly use each word in a sentence.
- Practice dictionary skills.
- Increase vocabulary through exposure to unfamiliar words.
- Practice reading comprehension.
LATIN:
- Memorize the conjugation chart for the irregular verb SUM.
- Memorize the 2nd declension masculine noun endings.
- Decline and translate 2nd declension masculine nouns.
HISTORY:
- Know that William Penn was the founder of Pennsylvania.
- Compare and contrast Penn's treatment of the natives with those of previous colonial founders.
- Know that the Quakers sought religious refuge in the Americas and believed in living peaceably.
SCIENCE:
- Identify key facts from a reading passage.
- Be familiar with the basic components of the renal system.
- Use a study guide to prepare for a test.
- Memorize the names and locations of major muscles and the components of the digestive and renal systems.
GEOGRAPHY:
- Develop a heart of compassion for the peoples of the world who don't yet know Christ..
- Continue memorizing the names of some of the countries in the West Indies.
MEMORY WORK:
Geography: We will continue memorizing the names and locations of islands in the West Indies. A hard copy of the map can be found behind the "memory" tab in your child's binder. Additional maps, as well as MP3s of the song, are available at this link: Geography Resources.
History: Students will memorize a portion of the Declaration of Independence (bolded portion only - recitation on 11/10) and 24 key dates. The key dates have accompanying jingles that do not have to be memorized, but will help students memorize the dates and retain details about the events to which they correspond. We will test over the first six dates on 9/29:
