BIBLE/VIRTUES:
This month, we'll be focusing on the virtues of respect, courage (classroom virtues), and fear of the Lord (the schoolwide virtue.) As we continue to study the Proverbs, we will gain an understanding of what it means to fear the Lord. He is worthy of the highest repect and reverence. Yet he also tells us to show proper respect to everyone. One of the habits of the heart that we regularly focus on at Fortis is respect, and the definition we use is "Valuing others more than self." We extend this to include showing respect to the building we are blessed to use, the supplies we share, the belongings of others, and the world God created!
In our history studies, we will learn about the incredible courage it took the colonists to leave the safety and comfort of life in England to establish settlements in a strange land. They faced myriad challenges, including hunger, illness, and death.
MATH:
- Divide a three-digit number by a two-digit divisor resulting in a two-digit quotient with a remainder.
- Review previously learned concepts.
- Review concepts related to fractions to prepare for upcoming unit.
- Improve speed and accuracy of multiplication facts.
- Assess mastery of multiplication facts.
SPELLING:
- Assess mastery of words ending with AIN.
- Learn to spell words ending in IVE.
GRAMMAR:
- Begin memorizing common prepositions.
- Know that prepositions are words that show position relative to an object and can modify nouns or adverbs.
- Compose sentences that include prepositional phrases.
- Classify and diagram pattern 1 sentences that include prepositional phrases.
WRITING/VOCABULARY:
- Learn the definitions of the four vocabulary words and be able to correctly use each word in an original sentence.
- Practice dictionary skills.
- Write a polished final draft.
- Know the three parts of a narrative story and be able to recognize rising and falling action.
- Use a checklist to ensure that assignment requirements are met.
- Be able to summarize a passage through oral narration.
- Expand vocabulary.
- Identify virtues, as well as elements of truth, beauty and goodness, in reading passages.
LATIN:
- Assess mastery of previously learned vocabulary words.
- Review all previous maxims, vocabulary words, and charts for upcoming test.
THE TEST will include all 40 of the previously learned vocabulary words (with a word bank). It will also include the two chapter maxims and the amo and mensa charts that will be partially filled in. They will need to complete the charts, including translations, from memory. For the verb (amo) chart, it would be helpful to review what 1st, 2nd, & 3rd person and singular and plural mean. This will help them figure out the translations, even if they don't have them memorized. For the noun (mensa) chart, point out that the translations are the same for each case in singular and plural, except that one is singular (table) and the other is plural (tables). This seems obvious to us, but it sometimes takes them awhile to make this connection, even though I review it ad nauseum in class. :-) On the noun chart, either the singular or the plural will be filled in for each case, so again, they ushould have no trouble figuring out what goes in the blanks. This is actually the purpose of the Latin charts, and it helps the students learn English grammar better, as well!
- Know the factors that led to the Pilgrims' migration to America.
- Know that the Pilgrims escaped from England and spent more than a decade in Holland before receiving permission to settle in America.
- Begin to understand the differences between the Pilgrims (separatists) and Puritans.
SCIENCE:
- Assess mastery of concepts related the history of anatomy & physiology and the skeletal system.
- Begin memorizing the major muscles of the body.
- Know that skeletal muscles attach to the skeleton to move the body.
- Understand the purpose of tendons.
- Identify key facts in and take notes from a non-fiction text.
GEOGRAPHY:
- Develop a heart of compassion for the peoples of the world who don't yet know Christ.
- Begin memorizing the names and locations of the larger islands in the West Indies.
- Memorize the names of the islands that constitute the Lesser Antilles.
- Be familiar with some characteristics of the West Indies, including climate, culture, and geographical features.
- Know the meaning of the word "archipelago."
MEMORY WORK:
Geography: We'll be memorizing the names and locations of some countries in the West Indies for the next few weeks. A hard copy of this map can be found behind the "memory" tab in your child's binder. Additional maps, as well as MP3s of the corresponding song, are available at this link: Geography Resources.
History: Students will memorize a portion of the Declaration of Independence (bolded portion only - recitation on 11/10) and 21 key dates. The key dates have accompanying jingles that do not have to be memorized, but will help students memorize the dates and retain details about the events to which they correspond.

Poetry: This quarter, we'll work on memorizing and reciting Proverbs 2:1-11 (NIV).
