VIRTUE: Wisdom
Please grade all work by first indicating which answers are incorrect and then giving your student an opportunity to correct his/her mistakes before offering assistance. Initial the top when all problems have been completed correctly. I will periodically check workbooks for completion. Work the answers to Practice and Review exercises on notebook paper. Check and correct all answers, than turn in as homework the following school day.
ALEKS MATH. On Friday, please work for no more than one hour on the ALEKS math objectives. If all objectives are completed before an hour has passed, then congratulations! You get to have a light day of math! For those who have not yet logged on, the class code is: KCHTD-TY6XE
MATH FACTS:
Please make copies of the four math facts pages (A-D) that were sent home in binders (inside front pocket). These are master copies. You will use these all year. We'll be using sheet A (addition) for the first few weeks. Here are the instructions for administering facts practice sheets:
1. Set a timer for five minutes.
2. When the five minutes is up, if your child has not finished, please mark the place where he/she left off, and then have the student finish the sheet.
3. Parents, please use the key sent home to check your child's work. Have him/her make any corrections.

VIRTUE: Wisdom
As we study of the biblical books of poetry with Proverbs, we will focus on the virtue of wisdom. The book of Proverbs implores the hearer to "get wisdom," and to search for her as for a precious treasure, because it is the key to avoiding sin and finding the knowledge of God. This month, we will discuss the meaning and importance of wisdom and learn to discern between Godly wisdom (see James 3:17) and worldy wisdom, which James describes as "earthly, unspiritual, and demonic."
MATH:
- Review multiplication and division of tens, hundreds, or thousands by a 1-digit whole number.
- Estimate the answer in addition and subtraction of whole numbers.

COMPOSITION:
This week, we’ll work on creating a key word outline and a rough draft for our story on the Lost Colony of Roanoke.
VOCABULARY:
1. Cut out the SHEET of vocab cards for this week's lesson. Do not cut out the individual cards. Hole punch it, and place it behind the "Writing & Grammar" tab.
2. Study the definitions and the parts of speech for each word. Color the picture on the front of the card. (This is an especially helpful step for kids who are visual and/or kinesthetic learners.)
3. Use a dictionary to look up the word.

4. On the reverse side of the card, students should fill in the blank with the word and read the sentence. Then, they should write an original sentence with the word that is significantly different from the sentence given. You might have to help your child with this part. Students may use the dictionary to find a sample sentence.

LATIN:
- Learn ten vocabulary words and the chapter maxim.
- Memorize the first conjugation "amo" chart.

HISTORY:
- Know that the Vikings actually "discovered" America 500 years before Columbus.
- Be familiar with the names of Erik the Red and Leif Erikson.
- Understand how the Viking peoples came to know Christ.
JOURNALS: Students may find a picture of a Viking ship from their history book, another book, or the internet. They may draw a picture of the ship themselves, or they can print out a picture from the internet, glue it into the journal, and color it.
SCIENCE:
- Know the basic anatomy of an animal cell. Be familiar with the names of the organelles and understand that they all work together to help a cell function and reproduce.
- Gain an appreciation for the intricacy and beauty of the human body.
GEOGRAPHY:
- Develop a heart of compassion for the peoples of the world who don't yet know Christ.
- Know the names and locations of the world’s seven continents and five oceans.
- Know the terms "tropics of Cancer and Capricorn" and "Arctic and Antarctic circles."
- Know what a compass rose is and how to use it on a map.
MEMORY WORK:
Scripture: We'll spend the year working on our scripture memorization of Psalm 27 (NIV). Our intent with scripture memory is for students to hide God’s word deep in their hearts so that they can call upon it for comfort, reassurance, and strength in times of trouble. With that in mind, we will not be testing over this scripture, but we will be reciting it together as a school every morning during assembly time.
Geography: We'll be working on the continents and oceans for the first few weeks. A hard copy of the map can be found behind the "memory" tab in your child's binder. Additional maps, as well as MP3s of the song, are available at this link: Geography Resources.
History: Students will memorize a portion of the Declaration of Independence (bolded portion only) and 21 key dates.The key dates have accompanying jingles that do not have to be memorized, but will help students memorize the dates. We will test over the first five dates on 9/30:

Poetry: This quarter, we'll work on memorizing and reciting Proverbs 2:1-11. Here is a link to an article that explains why we like to have our students memorize some passages using the King James Version. The poetic language of this particular chapter of Proverbs is especially beautiful in the KJV.
