"Let the favor of the Lord our God be upon us, and establish the work of our hands..." Psalm 90:17

VIRTUE: Courage
Over the next few weeks, we will be looking at the pioneering men and women who left all they knew in Europe to seek a new way of life in the New World. Students will be learning that courage is not the absence of fear, but the fortitude to do hard things int eh face of fear. They will understand that God is the true source of all courage.

VIRTUE: Orderliness
God is a god of order and not confusion. A balance exists to everything He does. Whether we are looking at the gravitational balance of the universe, how all the planets, moons, suns, and asteroids all work in harmony, holding each other in orbit, or the human body that works with miraculous timing and equilibrium, this is balance. These examples show that God is orderly and works with balance, both in matter and in time. (Credit to: Craig E. Beckley)

MATH:
  • Solve multi-step word problems..
  • Multiply a whole number by tens.
  • Multiply a 2-digit or a 3-digit whole number by a 2-digit whole number.
  • Review previously taught concepts using ALEKS math.
  • Assess mastery of concepts related to order of operations.
ALEKS: I have added a third unit on division to the objectives on ALEKS for this week. Your child should work for no more than an hour and can stop sooner if the objectives are completed before an hour is up.

BAR MODELING: We begin a unit on multi-step word problems this week. Please carefully read the notes in the HIG and/or watch videos on YouTube or on the parent blog under CURRICULA > MATH > BAR MODELING VIDEOS to prepare yourself to help your child bar model. Once kids "get it," they will be quickly tempted to skip the bar modeling, but the skills they are building now will help them solve complex word problems later in the year and in years to come.

SPELLING:
  • Assess mastery of words with the sound of /k/ spelled CH.
  • Learn how to spell words ending in AIN.
GRAMMAR:
  • Know that a preposition is a part of speech used to describe the position of one object in relation to another.
  • Begin to memorize the preposition flow jingle.
  • Understand that subjects and verbs must agree.
WRITING/VOCABULARY:
  • Learn the definitions of the vocabulary words and be able to correctly use each word in a sentence.
  • Learn dictionary skills.
  • Write a rough draft from a key word outline.
  • Effectively and accurately use prepositional openers in writing.
COMPOSITION:
This week, we’ll work on writing a rough draft of the Jamestown story.

VOCABULARY:
1. Cut out the SHEET of vocab cards for this week's lesson. Do not cut out the individual cards. Hole punch it, and place it behind the "Writing & Grammar" tab.
2. Study the definitions and the parts of speech for each word. Color the picture on the front of the card. (This is an especially helpful step for kids who are visual and/or kinesthetic learners.)
3. Use a dictionary to look up the word.
4. On the reverse side of the card, students should fill in the blank with the word and read the sentence. Then, they should write an original sentence with the word that is significantly different from the sentence given. You might have to help your child with this part. Students may use the dictionary to find a sample sentence.
5. If possible, students should write at least one synonym and one antonym for each word, using a dictionary or a thesaurus if necessary.
6. Look up the etymology of the word in the dictionary. Discuss the meaning. See if you can brainstorm some other words that come from the same root or roots.

MEMORY WORK:
Scripture: We'll spend the year working on our scripture memorization of Psalm 27 (NIV). Our intent with scripture memory is for students to hide God’s word deep in their hearts so that they can call upon it for comfort, reassurance, and strength in times of trouble. With that in mind, we will not be testing over this scripture, but we will be reciting it together as a school every morning during assembly time.

Geography: We'll be working on the islands of the West Indies for the next few weeks. A hard copy of the map can be found behind the "memory" tab in your child's binder. Additional maps, as well as MP3s of the song, are available at this link: Geography Resources.

History: Students will memorize a portion of the Declaration of Independence (bolded portion only) and 21 key dates. The key dates have accompanying jingles that do not have to be memorized, but will help students remember the dates and the corresponding events. We will test over the first five dates on 9/30:
1. Leif Erikson Explores America - 1000
2. Columbus Sails to the Americas - 1492
3. Lost Colony of Roanoke - 1583
4. Founding of Jamestown - 1607
5. Landing of the Pilgrims at Plymouth - 1620

Poetry: This quarter, we'll work on memorizing and reciting Proverbs 2:1-11Here is a link to an article that explains why we like to have our students memorize some passages using the King James Version. The poetic language of this particular chapter of Proverbs is especially beautiful in the KJV.
