MATH:
- Solve problems involving area of a triangle.
- Obtain a baseline assessment for division facts.
- Compare two quantities using ratio.
- Find equivalent ratios.
- Express a ratio in its simplest form.
- Use the comparison model to represent a ratio of two quantities.
- Solve word problems involving a ratio of two quantities.
MATH FACTS:
Please make copies of the four math facts pages (A-D) that were sent home in binders (inside front pocket). These are master copies. You will use these all year. We'll be using sheet A (addition) for the first few weeks. Here are the instructions for administering facts practice sheets:
1. Set a timer for five minutes.
2. When the five minutes is up, if your child has not finished, please mark the place where he/she left off, and then have the student finish the sheet.
3. Parents, please use the key sent home to check your child's work. Have him/her make any corrections.
3. Turn the sheet in as homework on the next school day. SPELLING:
- Assess mastery of words with the sound of /cŭl/ spelled CLE.
- Learn to spell words with the sound of /cŭl/ spelled CAL.
GRAMMAR:
- Know that a pattern 2 sentence includes a verb transitive and a direct object.
- Identify and correct sentence fragments.
- Know the difference between a simple sentence with complex parts and a compound sentence.
- Know how to punctuate a compound sentence.
WRITING/VOCABULARY:
- Write a narrative story about the Shot Heard Round the World.
- Effectively use conversation in writing.
- Learn new vocabulary words and be able to correctly apply them to writing.
1. Cut out the sheet of vocabulary cards for this week's lesson. Hole punch the page and place it in your binder behind the writing tab.
2. Study the definitions and parts of speech for each word.
3. Color the picture on the front of each card.
4. Write at least one synonym and one antonym for the word on the back of the card, if possible.
5. Write a sentence (other than the one already on the card) using the word.
6. Optional: Study the etymology of the word and brainstorm derivatives or other forms of the word. For example: Prosperity: prosper, prosperous.
READING:
- Learn about colonial life and the American Revolution through the reading of Johnny Tremain.
- Engage in meaningful Socratic discussion.
- Be able to summarize a passage through oral narration.
LATIN:
- Review materials from Ch11&12 to prepare for next week's test.
- Memorize the "sum" chart.
HISTORY:
- Know the name Paul Revere and understand the significance of his famous ride.
- Know what the "Shot Heard Round the World" was and that it was fired in Lexington and marked the beginning of the American Revolution.
SCIENCE:
- Assess mastery of concepts related to nutrition and the respiratory system.
- Know the main components and purposes of the circulatory system.
- Review for upcoming test.
GEOGRAPHY:
- Develop a heart of compassion for the peoples of the world who don't yet know Christ.
- Assess mastery of the names and locations of the countries of Central America.
MEMORY WORK:
Scripture: We'll spend the year working on our scripture memorization of Psalm 27 (NIV). Our intent with scripture memory is for students to hide God’s word deep in their hearts so that they can call upon it for comfort, reassurance, and strength in times of trouble. With that in mind, we will not be testing over this scripture, but we will be reciting it together as a school every morning during assembly time.
Geography: We're working on memorizing the names and locations of the countries of Central America. A hard copy of the map can be found behind the "memory" tab in your child's binder. Additional maps, as well as MP3s of the song, are available at this link: Geography Resources.
History: Students will memorize a portion of the Declaration of Independence (bolded portion only) and 21 key dates.The key dates have accompanying jingles that do not have to be memorized, but will help students remember the dates and the corresponding events. We will test over the first ten dates on 12/2:
