BIBLE/VIRTUES: This month, we'll be focusing on the virtues of wisdom and responsibility in our classroom. (Creativity is the schoolwide virtue.) As we study the Proverbs, we will gain an understanding of the value of wisdom for bringing blessing into our lives and the lives of those around us. Being responsible means doing the things you are expected to do and accepting the consequences--good or bad-- that result from your actions. The beginning of the school year is a great time to set an expectation for responsibility: for our choices, our assignments, our homework, our behaviors, and more! Additionally, our read-aloud for the first six weeks of school is a biography of George Muller, who relied solely on prayer to care for thousands of orphans in Bristol, England. The story of his conversion is one that always resonates with the students, as George goes from mocking God, making a series of terrible life choices, and refusing to take responsibility for any of them, to wholeheartedly repenting, trusting God to provide for his every need, and taking full responsibility for the thousands of children he rescued, nurtured, and taught about Jesus. He exemplifies wisdom, responsibility, and creativity!
MATH:
- Review multiplication and division.
- Assess multiplication and division mastery.
SPELLING:
- Assess mastery of words ending in "ain."
- Learn to spell words ending in "ive."
GRAMMAR:
- Write a practice and an improved sentence.
- Recognize a preposition and a prepositional phrase in a sentence.
- Label and diagram sentences that include prepositions and prepositional phrases.
WRITING/VOCABULARY:
- Learn the definitions of the four vocabulary words, and be able to correctly use each word in a sentence.
- Practice dictionary skills.
- Know the three parts of a narrative story.
- Use proofreading symbols to edit and correct papers.
- Increase vocabulary through exposure to unfamiliar words.
LATIN:
- Review previously learned vocabulary words, maxims, and charts for upcoming test.
- Be able to decline nouns and conjugate verbs.
NOTE: The Latin test will include all words and maxims from Ch1-4 in the same format they appear on the weekly quizzes. Students will have a word bank for the vocabulary on the test. They will also need to be able to complete the 1st Conjugation "amo" and 1st Declension "mensa" charts from memory. The charts will be partially filled in, and they will have to complete them. They will NOT need to know the noun cases or the noun jobs, however. These will already be filled in on the "mensa" chart."
- Know that the pilgrims arrived in America in 1620 via Leyden, Holland.
- Know the differences and similarities between the pilgrims and the puritans.
- Use Venn diagrams to compare and contrast.
SCIENCE:
- Identify key facts from a reading passage.
- Use a study guide to prepare for a test.
- Assess mastery of concepts related to the history of anatomy and physiology and the skeletal system.
NOTE: The science tests are not easy, but they will only include exactly what is on the study guide and nothing more other than a scripture to copy and a picture to draw (these are essentially worth two free points). Blank practice forms for the cell and skeleton memory work are available via the 5th Grade Documents Link above. These sections of the test will include word banks. Essay questions must be done using complete sentences. Students will lose points if they do not use capitalization and end marks, but they will not be penalized for spelling.
GEOGRAPHY:
- Develop a heart of compassion for the peoples of the world who don't yet know Christ..
- Continue memorizing the names of some of the major islands in the West Indies.
MEMORY WORK:
Geography: We will continue memorizing the names and locations of islands in the West Indies. A hard copy of the map can be found behind the "memory" tab in your child's binder. Additional maps, as well as MP3s of the song, are available at this link: Geography Resources.
History: Students will memorize a portion of the Declaration of Independence (bolded portion only - recitation on 11/10) and 24 key dates. The key dates have accompanying jingles that do not have to be memorized, but will help students memorize the dates and retain details about the events to which they correspond. We will test over the first six dates on 9/29:
