BIBLE/VIRTUES: This month, we'll be focusing on the virtues of courage and respect in our classroom. (Justice is the schoolwide virtue.) We'll talk about how we can show respect to our fellow classmates, teachers, administrators, parents, and political leaders. We'll have opportunities to practice courage by facing our fears of public speaking as we prepare to give our first set of recitations in a few weeks. As we study history, we'll see many examples of the courage that it took to settle in the New World. We'll have opportunities to discuss how the colonists navigated the challenges of respecting other cultures and other religions.
MATH:
- Review addition and subtraction of fractions.
- Divide two whole numbers and express the remainder as a fraction or a mixed number.
- Add proper fractions with unlike denominators.
- Subtract proper fractions with unlike denominators.
- Improve speed and accuracy of multiplicaiton facts.
SPELLING:
- Assess mastery of words ending in "ive."
- Learn to spell words ending in "ture."
GRAMMAR:
- Write a practice and an improved sentence.
- Label and diagram sentences that include prepositions and prepositional phrases.
- Identify and label pronouns in a sentence.
- Know that just like nouns, pronouns can have different jobs in a sentence.
WRITING/VOCABULARY:
- Learn the definitions of the four vocabulary words, and be able to correctly use each word in a sentence.
- Practice dictionary skills.
- Know the purpose of a dramatic opener and be familiar with several different types.
- Use proofreading symbols to edit and correct papers.
- Increase vocabulary through exposure to unfamiliar words.
LATIN:
- Memorize 10 new vocabulary words and 1 new chapter maxim.
- Know that 2nd declension nouns are masculine.
- Begin to memorize the "ludus" chart and the 2nd declension noun endings.
- Be able to decline a 2nd declension noun.
HISTORY:
- Be familiar with the highlights of Squanto's life.
- Know the origins of the American Thanksgiving holiday.
- Compare and contrast the lives of Squanto and Joseph, and understand how God used their difficult circumstances to help bless nations and fulfill his plans.
SCIENCE:
- Identify key facts from a reading passage.
- Be familiar with the basic characteristics of skeletal muscles.
- Begin memorizing the names of major muscles in the body.
GEOGRAPHY:
- Develop a heart of compassion for the peoples of the world who don't yet know Christ..
- Continue memorizing the names of some of the major islands in the West Indies.
MEMORY WORK:
Geography: We will continue memorizing the names and locations of islands in the West Indies. A hard copy of the map can be found behind the "memory" tab in your child's binder. Additional maps, as well as MP3s of the song, are available at this link: Geography Resources.
History: Students will memorize a portion of the Declaration of Independence (bolded portion only - recitation on 11/10) and 24 key dates. The key dates have accompanying jingles that do not have to be memorized, but will help students memorize the dates and retain details about the events to which they correspond. We will test over the first six dates on 9/29:

Poetry: This quarter, we'll work on memorizing and reciting Proverbs 2:1-11 (NIV). Recitation will be on 10/6.
My son, if you accept my words
and store up my commands within you,
