MATH:
- Assess mastery of division facts.
- Find the area of a triangle when the height for a given base falls outside the triangle.
- Investigate and understand the meaning of volume.
- Find the volume of solid figures by counting unit cubes.
- Derive a formula for finding the volume of a cuboid.
NOTE: I switched the order of Ch7, L7 (a Practice exercise) and Ch8, L1 (volume) so that I could work with kids in small groups using the proper manipulatives so that you don't have to acquire them for one lesson.
SPELLING:
- Assess mastery of words with the sound of /ul/ spelled IL.
- Learn to spell words with the sound of /ul/ spelled EL.
GRAMMAR:
- Classify and diagram pattern two sentences.
- Compose a pattern two sentence.
- Identify and differentiate between compound and complex sentences.
- Write topic sentences and clinchers.
- Identify key facts in a passage and use them to write a summarized report.
READING:
- Summarize a passage through oral narration.
- Identify virtues, as well as elements of truth, beauty and goodness, in reading passages.

- Learn ten new vocabulary words.
HISTORY:
- Know what the U.S. Constitution was and how and why it was conceived.
- Know what the three branches of the federal government are, as well as some of their roles, and understand the concept of balance of power.
SCIENCE:
- Know that a heart has four chambers and what each chamber is called.
- Begin to memorize how the blood flows from lungs to the heart and back to the heart to be distributed throughout the body.
- Know the primary functions and roles of blood in the body.
GEOGRAPHY:
- Develop a heart of compassion for the peoples of the world who don't yet know Christ.
- Assess mastery of the names and locations of the countries of Central America.
- Begin memorizing the names and locations of the countries of Central America.
MEMORY WORK:
Geography: A hard copy of the maps can be found behind the "memory" tab in your child's binder. Additional maps, as well as MP3s of the song, are available at this link: Geography Resources.
History: Students will memorize a portion of the Declaration of Independence (bolded portion only) and 24 key dates. The key dates have accompanying jingles that do not have to be memorized, but will help students memorize the dates and retain details about the events to which they correspond.

PREAMBLE TO THE U.S. CONSTITUTION. Students will recite or sing this to the class on 12/5. In the video link (Schoolhouse Rock "The Preamble"), the actual Preamble part of the song starts at 1 minute. Please note that the song is word-for word except that it does not include "of the United States" in the first line.
"We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty, to ourselves and our posterity do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America."
Poetry: Our second-quarter poem is The New Colossus. Students will recite it for a grade on 11/17:
